The Objective & Business Context

The goal of this project was to deliver valuable insights to the Head of Training regarding the progress and overall performance of their pilots. The legacy portal overview lacked specificity and required tailoring for the business/private aviation sector (e.g., focusing on specific aircraft types such as the B737).

Understanding the Head of Training

Our primary target audience was the Head of Trainers at airline companies. They needed to quickly evaluate training performance, monitor individual pilot progress, and make evidence-based curriculum adjustments.

Cross-Functional Alignment: Early in the project, we kicked off discussions with key stakeholders—including sales leads, data analysts, senior pilots, and training managers—to capture business and operational needs. From there, we built wireframes to validate our findings with the business and partner with development early on to ensure technical feasibility.

  • Pilots & Training Leads: Focused on whether the layout helped heads of trainers quickly answer core questions.
  • Product Sales: Validated which analytics features would serve as selling points for prospective clients.
  • Data Analytics Team: Analyzed data restrictions across different operators and aircraft types.
  • Engineering & Tech Team: Partnered on wireframe reviews to confirm front-end component feasibility, technical constraints, and API integration requirements early in the design phase.

Feedback Integration

Once all input was gathered, we mapped the insights against user goals and technical constraints—translating cross-team feedback into concrete design iterations.

Why Time-Based Trends Matter

An initial constraint was that data was delivered as static aggregated averages, which hid critical trends to display trend-over-time metrics. I collaborated directly with the development team to restructure our data access—shifting from aggregated snapshots to chronological datasetsthat unlocked temporal analytics for our users.

Why this mattered: Averages provide only partial insight. Showing performance trends over time (from 2021 to 2024) reveals whether pilot performance in critical events—such as Go-arounds with RVR > 400M, Takeoffs with crosswind, or Visual approaches—is improving or declining.
